Running Start

In your waking stupor you hand over decision to an unknown voice and its guarantee of a new beginning.

Yielding, you parse another murmur, poking a near extinguished light. What if the pale charity disguises a colder, sinister premium? Its disguise dazzles while its brilliance consumes—a barren tundra, reducing achievement and returning your hard won momentum to a standstill.

On this empty steppe, exposed to the elements and pretenders alike, a familiar birthright ascends: its banner carries a gathering rumour above all others. Its breath illuminates yesterday’s now animated embers of ambition, striking fear into the heart of endless choice.

Not a fresh start, but the start you need.

Ó Néill's Cavalry flag

Ó Néill’s flag, according to George Gush

This early renaissance Gaelic cavalry flag belonged to Aodh Mór Ó Néill, a 16th/17th century hero. Its unapologetic form and purposeful expression, is the starting point for our own homage.

It was used by Ó Néill’s forces in the ‘Battle of Erne Fords’ on 10th October 1593, and though Ó Néill led half of England’s crown forces he was in fact directing Gaelic lords behind the scenes to present a loss on the day.

Ó Néill Mór foresaw the Tudor’s true motivation in Gaelic Ireland and with his experience of both the English and his native power structure was among only a few who had the ability, the audacity and the intelligence to mount an opposition.

Revealing his open ‘rebellion’ in February 1595, his strategies represent a Gaelic mastery of deception, networked communications and warfare, oft-ignored and undervalued, even to this day. Ó Néill is easily one of the most outstanding independent minds of early modern Ireland.

Aodh Mór Ó Néill

There are no new roads, save that which you add to, in this moment, and the next. This one is distinctly yours, and you alone must exhaust the impulse.

It’s not the responsibility to do it that paralyses, it’s knowing that you can.
