Flights of Fancy

Our 3rd limited-edition is made of a slightly heavier grade cotton, has a closer neck than our last and matched with set-in shoulder and shorter cut for contemporary tastes. The tee serves as an excellent base for our graphic adaption of the early Gaelic war-piper of the 1500s.

Despite their oft-assumed low-tech approach The Irish Kern (‘ceithern’) begin making themselves present on the European battlefield in the 1500s. They’re soon called upon though because of their steadfast endurance and tenacity even in the midst of so-called ‘death ground’.

The warpiper from Derrick’s Image of Ireland, 1581

The foreign adventurers don’t reach their peak however until the mass exodus of the military caste after the Treaty of Limerick in 1691, which sees them and their families set out in their droves, across Europe over the next 200 years.

The Wild Geese will forever be known as some of Ireland’s best, with their expansion throughout Europe, America and across the world under multiple banners and causes representing a continually overlooked aspect to the men of action they were.
